Your Ontario auto Insurance is changing

Here’s what you need to know

_

More choice. More control. Starting July 1, 2026.

The Ontario government is updating auto insurance to provide more flexibility for consumers. Some accident benefits that were previously included in every policy will become optional — so you can choose the coverage that fits your needs and your budget.

What Are Statutory Accident Benefits (SABs)?

SABs is the term for the mandatory and optional benefits provided under Ontario’s auto insurance program. The Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule is part of the Ontario Insurance Act. These benefits provide financial support if you're injured in a car accident, no matter who caused it. They help cover:

  • Medical treatment

  • Rehabilitation

  • Income replacement if you can’t work

What’s Staying the Same?

You’ll still be covered for:

  • Medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care: These essential benefits remain part of every policy.

What’s Becoming Optional?

Starting July 1, 2026, the following benefits will be optional:

Who’s Covered Under Optional Benefits?

Optional benefits apply only to:

  • You (the named insured)

  • Your spouse

  • Your dependants

  • Drivers listed on your policy

Note: Pedestrians, cyclists, and some passengers may no longer be covered unless they fall into one of these categories.

What Should You Do Next?

  • If you're already insured with us:
Your existing coverage will remain the same upon renewal. If you decide to make changes, contact your broker.

  • If you're shopping for insurance:
You’ll be able to choose which optional benefits to include. Ask your broker what’s covered in your quote.

Still have questions?
When your policy renews after July 1, 2026, it will renew with the benefits listed above as optional, in the amounts set out under your existing policy. If you would like to make changes, or if you have questions, contact your broker.
