How to make a property claim

When a covered loss requires emergency repairs, we'll help connect you with qualified restoration professionals who can respond quickly to help prevent further damage.

Our trusted network of restoration partners is available 24/7 to assist with emergency services such as:

  • Water extraction and drying

  • Emergency board-up services

  • Property cleanup and restoration

  • Repair and rebuilding services

Your claims representative will help coordinate the support you need and explain the options available to you.

Yes. If a covered claim makes your home temporarily uninhabitable, your policy may help cover reasonable additional living expenses while repairs are being completed.

Depending on your coverage, this may include costs such as:

  • Temporary accommodations

  • Hotel stays

  • Additional meal expenses

  • Other eligible living expenses

The transition from Economical Insurance to Definity Insurance does not change the coverage provided by your policy. Coverage remains subject to your terms, conditions, limits, and deductibles of your policy.

  1. Contact the police (for theft or vandalism) or fire department as needed.
  2. Keep a copy of the police/fire report for your records.
  3. Contact our 24-hour emergency line to report your claim: 1-800-607-2424 or 1-888-875-8088 (Quebec).
  4. Tell us about the incident in as much detail as possible, and provide a list of the items that were stolen or damaged, including (if applicable):
    • Detailed description of the item
    • Make and model number, if known
    • When and where the item was purchased
    • Approximate purchase cost
    • Proof of ownership, if possible (e.g., receipt, photo, warranty registration)
  5. If repairs are required, and with your permission, we’ll then contact one of our approved contractors in your area so they can get started right away — no appraisals or estimates required.
  6. If you'd like to use your own contractor, we'll provide them with your coverage information and answer any questions they may have. A claims representative will then complete an assessment of the damage, which you can take to your preferred contractor.
  7. If repairs are not an option or your stolen property cannot be recovered, one of our claims representatives will help you in processing your claim for a cash settlement.
  8. If your home is not liveable, make alternate living arrangements. Ask your broker or claims adjuster for details about your coverage for additional incurred living expenses such as hotel and meal costs.
